First the world will have just weeks to accomplish that feat. Scientists estimate that 300,000 to one million people would immediately be in need of the anti-viral. And, as a matter of fact - at this time there are very limited stocks.
Because of production procedures the current time frame is four to six months to produce a certain quantity of vaccine. This may not be fast enough. The fact is that for containment the world would need to carry out a massive inoculation campaign within a two to three week time frame for any type of chance to contain the virus.
There is also inherent risk that current vaccines for the avian flu could have little or no effect on a pandemic virus.
Why? Simply this: The proper flu vaccine needs to match the pandemic virus - and the risk that the match for this exact pandemic is at hand, may not be a simple task to achieve as we may not know in advance the exact variation "this" virus will consist of.
So, even though we're in possession of one sort of vaccine, faced with a slightly different "code" of the influenza virus - in fact, the world then would be in need an entirely new vaccine.
To illustrate, a vaccine developed in Thailand may not protect you from another variation of this pandemic virus found in other parts of the world. In fact, in order to create the exact anti virus for that exact epidemic, could take several months to develop. And, by that time millions could already have died.
Then there is the distribution issue. Even when we have the vaccination ready at hand, it needs to be distributed to the people who need it throughout the nation, or nations even. The distribution of this will of course take some time. Only when production is up, and logistics for that particular production is in place we will have fast delivery of the antidotes.
