Should you take the threat of a possible bird flu pandemic seriously, or is this not a concern of yours?

First of all: In order to be categorized a pandemic, the phenomenon, whatever it is, has to be spread human to human. Not wanting to sound like a doomsday prophet - in the end the following is known. The threat is real.

Even though the world is becoming more and more aware - as well as united in the efforts to stopping this deadly virus - saving an apocalyptic nightmare - the Bird Flu is spreading at an alarming rate. There sure is the potential for a catastrophic flu pandemic evolving faster than we could ever realize or imagine.

Only since 1997 we have had the virus go from affecting birds only, to affecting other animals and now - finally - observing an increasing amount of human infections.

This goes to show that the virus is changing. However alarming - thats not for the better.

Due to the fact that at this time there is no absolute proof of human to human transmittal of the virus - we cannot know or positively guess when or where a flu pandemic may start.

By monitoring, reporting and working together on vaccines we are at the present time keeping ahead of a possible flu pandemic, which could devastate the global community. There is promise as seen by the recent discoveries of a workable vaccine for the avian flu virus.

Even with this new threat, we as individuals do need to take precautions to keep from contracting any of the other forms of the avian bird influenza virus (or the bird flu). By continued research, individual effort and the joint effort of the global community we may avoid a flu pandemic that could have the inherent potential of killing millions and millions of people throughout the world.

For more information on the avian flu virus some good resources would be the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention throughout the world, the World Health Organization (WHO), The Department of Health and Human Services, the World Organization for Animal Health and the New England Journal of Medicine - among others.
